Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives by Pia Mellody
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Great precursor to the author's workbook-'Breaking Free: A Recovery Workbook for Facing Codependence'. This book fully describes what codependency is, where it comes from, and different kinds. I gave one less star because half way in the book I just felt more shameful (as it described, at length, basically, how you mess up your own kids if you don't put your codependency in check! ..and that the concrete ways to start recovery are not in there! Wrong book-that's in the workbook, but I still valued the information and made numerous highlights and personal notes. (only about 10 pgs in the last section that point you in the right direction) If you can't exactly pin point what a codependency behavior looks like and how it 'rears it's head', I would still absolutely recommend this book! It goes into detail of the different abuses that may of caused your codependency behavior...from very serious abuse (physical/sexual) to 'minor' shaming because Johnny spilled the milk. A very dynamic topic.
